故事是敘述很早很早以前台灣鳳山地區，有一位有錢的財主金員外，仗著自己財大勢大，時常欺凌窮人，而且喜歡佔人便宜。某日，一對來自外地的兄妹阿勇與阿珠，因看不慣金員外欺人的行為，便利用他愛貪小便宜的弱點，故意跑到金員外院子外，指著院中的白揚樹，說樹上的鳥巢藏著稀世珍寶一隱身草。

　　金員外一聽，急忙將鳥巢取下找隱身草，適巧金夫人前來院子曬菜干，不慎遺失心愛的髮簪，直喊:「不見了，不見了！」金員外一聽，以為自己已找到隱身草，決定去市集捉弄別人，並試試隱身草的神奇魔力；卻不知大家早已聯合好要教訓金員外。不知情的金員外以為大家都看不見他，還大搖大擺上公堂捉弄縣太爺，引出一連串的趣味情節，也得到應有的教訓。
